redeeming the time - ἐξαγοραζόμενοι τὸν καιρόν
Kairos is the point in history in which time is disturbed by eternity.
- Paul Tillich
I see all joys and disappointments in life as means of grace that bridge to the sacred. Our daily struggles and mundane routines provide us with opportunities for doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly in awe of our Creator. It is in striving for these purposes amidst my own flaws and failures that I find my vocation.
Therefore, to me, the basic question about contemporary societies is how well they embody scriptural visions of shalom, compassion, and justice. Doing research with this conviction does not essentially change my analysis of social problems and public policy. But it forces me to acknowledge that the prevalent norms from my own communities of reference can never be accepted at their face value. Instead, as faith-grounded social scientists, we are called to reflect critically, to investigate meticulously, and to witness faithfully.
